ABOUT OUR CLASSES
ASHTANGA
Ashtanga is a set of series which are taught using a specific method.
Each series is a set sequence of postures which are done using the tristana method for focus and each movement has a breath associated.
The postures are held longer than in typical vinyasa classes which gives us the chance to teach alignment, for hands on adjustments, and gives your body time to remember the pose.
Once the sequence and alignment become familiar your attention can be focused using the tristana. Then one is able to fall into a meditation of movement and breath.
Using this method and this series as a base, we teach these postures in our progressive classes, OY Primary 1-3.
If you’re new to yoga or just to ashtanga you may want to start with OY Primary 1 to learn the tristana method and to get more instruction on the postures.
Dharma Yoga
Dharma Yoga is a modern interpretation of classical Eight-limbed or Hatha-Raja Yoga, deeply rooted in ethical precepts that includes elements of flowing Vinyasa, inversions, and held poses that will help you to discover concentration, meditation, abiding contentedness and deep healing relaxation.
Dharma Yoga was created by Sri Dharma Mittra in 1975. A complete practice that will lead to radiant health, a peaceful life and, eventually self-realization. Dharma Yoga is traditional, yet contemporary — perfect for the fast-paced world of today.
It is a method that weaves together many teachings in order to bring all students closer to the goal of Self-realization.
Beginners and those new to yoga are welcome to take part is this well rounded, devotional practice. More advanced variations to the poses are offered.
Class ends with guided relaxation, breathwork, and meditation.
CREATIVE VINYASA
Vinyasa means connecting breath and movement. Each class is composed of different postures that either lead to a stretching or strengthening of a certain body part, to a particular posture, or sometimes encompasses all three. Vinyasa, or flow classes, were born out of ashtanga.
Creative means you’ll never step in the same vinyasa class twice—different poses, different sequencing every time to make sure we are affecting your body on the whole, keeping your mind engaged and present, and challenging your body on different levels every time.
We prefer to build our own internal heat rather than use external sources, and we structure our classes to help you do that. We keep our studio around 78 summer/82 winter.
